Becoming Nancy is based on the novel of the same name by Terry Ronald.

What is the plot of the musical?

The musical is set in the late 1970s in South London and tells the story of David Starr, a talented high school student who is cast in the role of Nancy in the school’s production of “Oliver!” His casting creates a stir and he becomes the target of bullying.

However, it also leads to unexpected relationships and learning about acceptance and identity.

The musical explores themes of gender, sexuality, friendship, and finding one’s place in the world, with a focus on the experiences and challenges faced by LGBTQ+ youth.

Productions

The musical initially debuted at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia, with its world premiere in fall 2019. This inaugural production was directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell.

Its UK premiere is scheduled to take place at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre in winter 2024.
