Lempicka is a musical that explores the life and art of Tamara de Lempicka, a renowned Polish painter known for her distinctive Art Deco style.

Lempicka will come to Broadway in 2024, beginning performances at the Longacre Theatre on 19 March.

Synopsis

The musical is set against the backdrop of the tumultuous events of the early 20th century, including the Russian Revolution and World War II. It delves into Lempicka’s life, her rise to fame as an artist, and her complex relationships.

The story begins with Tamara de Lempicka’s life in Russia, where she belongs to the aristocracy. Her world is turned upside down by the Russian Revolution, forcing her to flee to Paris.

In Paris, Lempicka reinvents herself as an artist, becoming a part of the city’s bohemian and artistic circles. The musical’s narrative focuses on Lempicka’s passionate and tumultuous relationships, especially with her husband Tadeusz Lempicki and her female lovers, reflecting her fluid sexuality.

These relationships are set against her growing reputation as an artist, known for her striking and sensual portraits. A central theme of the musical is Lempicka’s struggle with her identity as an artist and a woman in a male-dominated society.

The climax of the musical deals with the outbreak of World War II and Lempicka’s subsequent move to the United States. Here, she faces new challenges, both personally and professionally, as she struggles to adapt to the changing art scene and her aging.
