Synopsis
The musical brings to life the complex and often untold stories of the women who fought for suffrage, highlighting their triumphs, struggles, and the internal conflicts within the movement.
The narrative centres around key figures in the suffrage movement, such as Alice Paul, a determined and strategic activist, and Carrie Chapman Catt, a seasoned leader of the National American Woman Suffrage Association.
These characters, along with others like Ida B.
Wells, a prominent African American suffragist, and Inez Milholland, a charismatic speaker and advocate, represent the diverse voices and approaches within the movement.
Suffs explores the various tactics used by the suffragists, from peaceful protests and lobbying to more radical actions like hunger strikes and demonstrations in front of the White House.
The musical portrays the personal sacrifices many of these women made, facing imprisonment, societal backlash, and personal challenges in their fight for equality.
The climax of the musical coincides with the passing of the 19th Amendment, showcasing the culmination of years of relentless campaigning and advocacy.
However, the story also acknowledges that the fight for full voting rights continued long after 1920, particularly for women of color.
About the show
History
The show made its debut Off-Broadway in 2022 at The Public Theater. The production will come to Broadway at the Music Box Theatre from 26 March 2024.
