The Heart of Rock and Roll (Huey Lewis musical)

The Heart of Rock and Roll

The Heart of Rock and Roll musical is inspired by the songs of Huey Lewis and the News.

The musical is coming to Broadway in 2024, beginning performances at the James Earl Jones Theatre on 29 March ahead of an opening night on 22 April.

Synopsis

It’s a celebration of the spirit of 1980s rock and roll, infused with the energy and optimism of Huey Lewis’s iconic music. The plot centres around Bobby, a former rock musician whose band was once on the verge of stardom.

Now, years later, Bobby finds himself in the corporate world, far removed from his musical past. He’s successful but unfulfilled, longing for the days when life was about music and love, not board meetings and bottom lines.

The story takes off when Bobby meets Cassie, an ambitious and idealistic young woman who dreams of shaking up the world. Cassie reignites Bobby’s passion for music, and together, they embark on a journey to bring rock and roll back into their lives and the lives of those around them.

Set against the backdrop of a rapidly changing music industry, the musical explores themes of passion, second chances, and the enduring power of dreams. The score features some of Huey Lewis and the News’ greatest hits, including The Power of Love, Hip to Be Square, and If This Is It.

The musical’s climax is a high-energy finale that sees Bobby and Cassie, along with their friends, bringing down the house with a spectacular rock and roll show.
